Penny Dolan: The tale of Rickety Hall

I illustrated Scholastic’s edition of Penny Dolan’s The Tale of Rickety Hall (2000) and it’s sequels: The tale of Highover Hill (2002) and The Tale of White Winter Hollow (2004).

“Here’s luck right under our feet!” says Jonas Jones, when he finds the first sixpence in The Tale of Rickety Hall.
I certainly felt “luck under my feet” when I saw the illustrations Wilbert van der Steen made for this book, which became a Children’s Book Award nomination.
As the one tale grew into a trilogy, with The Tale of Highover Hill and The Tale of White Winter Hollow, I was delighted to have Wilbert’s atmospheric black & white illustrations accompanying each adventure.
His skill in placing figures within in a setting, capturing the gestures and expressions of the different characters, and showing the mood of the writing really helps the young reader enjoy the stories.
Plus I am always, always being asked about Wilbert’s pictures whenever I talk to children in schools!

Best wishes, Penny Dolan
